20/10/2019 - report - photos - Dalpura Canyon track notes

Participants: Tom Brennan, Rachel Grindlay, Onni Elliot, Alex Griffith

A warm sunny day out of the canyon translated into a cool day in the canyon, and rapidly numb feet once we started wading. Rachel showed fortitude by belaying everyone down the first abseil while standing knee deep in the water. I had been spooked by swims mentioned by the club party in Dalpura from the previous week, but as it turned out, any swimming was entirely optional. We did the final optional abseil, and after some messing about, found our way out to the spectacular ledge looking across to Dalpura Head for morning tea.

Plenty of lovely wildflowers out on the walk out, including a few orchids and waratahs. A quick drive down the road past John Kennett's cavalcade of cars parked above Jungaburra Brook (OK, there were other groups there too), and we parked just beyond Watertrough Hill.

Mis-navigating into the upper reaches of Kamarah Gully, we did a bit of exploring through some nice riparian overhangs, but eventually bailed out as the creek opened up. Wandering along the cliff tops, we eventually found our way back down near the start of the short canyon section. I meat-anchored Rachel down the first drop, and she did a deep wade, while the rest of us bridged across. She later justified the chilly paddle by not noticing the heat on the walk out. A good day out in the bush.
