31/03/2007 - report - photos - Why Don't We Do It In The Road? Canyon track notes

Participants: Tom Brennan, Rachel Grindlay, James Yorston

Despite my achilles tendon still recovering for our upcoming New Zealand trip, I persuaded Rachel that it could handle some easy canyoning. We were aiming to do Why Don't We Do It In The Road? Canyon and possibly Water Dragon as well.

At the top of the first drop we found an army group rigged up and ready to go. They let us use their rope which was kind of them. At the start of the canyon proper we suited up. I had some difficulty with the abseil as the strength wasn't quite there in my ankle. The canyon seemed particularly cold, even for March, and the second abseil didn't help. I couldn't control myself and swung right under the waterfall, getting a good wetting. By the time we swum the pool after the final drop, we were looking for some sun, which we found on the ledge overlooking the Wollangambe.

Once in the sun, we rapidly lost interest in getting out of it. This ruled out Water Dragon, which I had done and neither of the others was keen to do. We were so keen to stay in the sun that we did the traverse along the ledge to the near exit rather than dropping down into the 'Gambe!

That made it a pretty short day, but we had a throw of the frisbee in the car park at Cathedral Reserve. We also stopped for dessert at the Apple Bar at Bilpin, where I had a large slice of cheesecake.
